Honouring Sacrifice: The Enduring Significance of Remembrance Day in Canada

Tamara Kronis November 11, 2023

Remembrance Day is not just a date on the calendar. Remembrance Day stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave soldiers and veterans who fought valiantly to secure the liberties we must protect today.

We are fortunate to live in a country that aspires to peace and tolerance. On Remembrance Day, we pause to remember those who selflessly put their lives on the line, or made the ultimate sacrifice, in pursuit of peace, justice and freedom. By acknowledging their sacrifices, we recommit to upholding the freedom they fought for and recommit to their unwavering belief in the possibility of a better world.

Remembrance Day also reminds us of the importance of our Legions, which serve as living monuments to the sacrifices of our veterans and embody the essence of community and camaraderie. On Vancouver Island, our Legions are more than just buildings. They are important gathering places in our communities, provide crucial support to veterans, and offer an exceptional sense of belonging and acceptance.
While so many have closed their doors across the island, we are so fortunate to have an active Canadian Legion in Nanaimo.

Wearing a poppy in the days leading up to Remembrance Day is a powerful tradition, a heartfelt tribute signifying our collective gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. By placing this meaningful symbol over our hearts, we honour their memory and support those who protect us today.

I wear a poppy to honour the pursuit of peace and those who fought so hard for it so that my two kids will live in a country that is strong and free.

In an era marked by division, Remembrance Day serves as an anchor, grounding us in the values that define us as Canadians. Remembrance Day stands as a steadfast pillar, reminding us of the immeasurable price paid by our veterans. It reaffirms our commitment to honour, duty and patriotism.

In observing Remembrance Day, let us rededicate ourselves to preserving the values that have made Canada a beacon of hope and freedom. Let us ensure that the sacrifices of our veterans are never forgotten. We are their legacy.
